MAC’S Ruby Woo…I purchased my first tube around 2006/2007 and after my purchase of the matte red loveliness my mirror told me “WHY DID YOU BUY THIS LIP COLOR? YOU LOOK LIKE A CLOWN! IF YOU DON’T SIT YOUR RONALD MCDONALD LOOKING SELF DOWN!”
And with that I felt like a fool every time I caught a glimpse of myself in it…that mind game stopped me from wearing it. It would remain at the bottom of my makeup bag until one day I thought about how I never gave a crap about what one thought of my choice of clothing so shouldn’t red lipstick give me the same thought? I stopped…stopped beating myself up about it and wore it proudly without a thought of someone throwing shade at the shade.
As the years passed I was delighted to see a lot of women of color must’ve felt the same…women of all shades were opting for a bright red or a fluorescent pink pout! So when I saw Rocquelle, of www.considermelovely.com, interview in regards to her choice of lip color and the hate that erupted I literally cringed…I cringed a confused “WTF?!?” cringe!
My niece is in middle school and every form of bullying is being presented to her---from school to cyberspace. But to think that the parents of my niece’s peers could possibly been apart of the slanderfest that occurred due to Rocquelle’s lip color choice makes me think about Tupac’s words on the song “Keep Your Head Up”: “…there ain't no hope for the youth and the truth is. It ain't no hope for the future.”
With no pun intended I am glad to know that Rocquelle has kept her head up through all the buffoonery that occurred from ESSENCE magazine posting an image of her on their FACEBOOK page with a popping red lip. I can really go on and on about this subject but I’d rather for you to be inspired by reading Rocquelle’s blog article regarding the matter here: http://considermelovely.com/2014/02/internet-meanies-cyber-bullying.html or check out her FOX NEWS interview, regarding the matter, here: http://www.myfoxhouston.com/video?clipId=9817786&autostart=true.

I SALUTE YOU ROCQUELLE; stay encouraged hon!
